Working with Michelle Redfern at Advancing Women is a fantastic endeavour. Michelle is world leader in gender equality through her courses, podcasts, research and client engagements. Deep White is able to support her using data analysis and visualisation to identify and respond to cultural issues her clients might face.  We enhance this with broader data sources to draw out key developments in gender equality across Australia.

THE CHALLENGE:

Michelle is a leader in her field and makes significant impact in Australia and beyond in addressing gender equality. She collects and has access to vast volumes of data. She needs to dig deep into this data, but would be first to admit she is no data analytics guru. Nor can she justify the cost of a full time analyst or working with a large consultancy. This is where Deep White steps in - we can provide expert help as she requires it, while also having the long term relationship to know her, her business and her interests, very well.

HOW WE WORK:

We work with Michelle across three main areas:

Client Engagements:

Michelle works with organisations that may have gender or cultural challenges and would like her expertise in addressing these. The first step in this is research to assess the status quo. This means creating and analysing surveys done to employees of these clients. This is where Deep White steps in. We initally work with Michelle to precisely understand her clients needs and challenges, and work with her to design a survey to uncover the issues in clear and robust ways. We then build, test and execute the survey, whilst making sure data and insights are secure.

Once conducted, we then complete the analysis of the survey, initally sharing key findings and presenting visualisations (encompassing Michelle's branding). This includes multi-factor analysis, which uncovers the cross-themes across responses, from which segments can be built. These themes and segments are critical to diagnosing client challenges. We set baselines and may also introduce external data if it is suitable. We also conduct text and sentiment analysis of verbatim responses to uncover further insights, which we align to (andoften explain) the survey findings. We do the same with the text of the focus groups Michelle also conducts.

We close off the project by working with Michelle as she uses her experise to put together the final recommendations, documents and presentations. We may investigate some areas further while making sure all of Michelle's findings are backed up by solid data evidence.

Broader Research:

Michelle works on larger scale research projects. With these we again help her formulate and design this research and go through and execute, analyse and interpret the findings with her. These larger surveys mean we can use more complex statistical techniques to uncover key predictors and outcomes. A regular  high profile project of hers we help with is the Advancing Women in Sport initiative (2024 report just released).

National Trends:

There is a great deal of gender related data which can also be accessed and analysed.  We work with Michelle to source, optimise and understand this in clear practical ways. We can slice and dice to pull the key insights which are relevant to Michelle and the mission of her organisation. An example of this is our Census and Occupation explorer tools (below - also see 2021 and 2016).

OUTCOMES:

The key outcome for Michelle is she can concentrate on what she does best and leave the technical work to the boffins! But it also means she can present her findings and recommendations with 100% confidence that they are valid and interrogated by highly skilled analysts who know what she is after. Likewise she is served a much deeper level of insights and narrative than she would get from basic profiling.

Of course there are broader societal benefits of this as better research and analytics leads to more impact and change in gender issues across Australia and beyond. That gives us a great deal of pride.

The relationship works well as it is effectively a partnership - it is not segregation of tasks but parties doing what they do best and coming together to build compelling narratives and clear recommendations.

FEEDBACK:

"Aaron has been a trusted partner of Advancing Women for several years as a data practitioner and advocate for our cause. Working across a diverse range of projects, he has a fantastic ability to consolidate data and draw key insights to help identify, track and work towards resolving areas of inequality for our clients, partners and beyond. He works with accuracy and speed, which is supported by excellent presentation, communication and professionalism. I would recommend Aaron to similar smaller organisations as a partner to deliver key data and insight projects."
