Pay Equality and Diversity in Australia

The interactive tool below allows us to explore pay inequality and diversity by job.  By factoring biases in age, education and industry we can generate a more balanced view of the gender pay gap in different jobs.  Further exploration well and truely shows there remains a considerable pay gap in Australia.

Getting a fair view of the gender pay gap is difficult as it often dismisses other factors which may drive this imbalance.  Using the ABS Census Table Builder Pro we can use income data along with other personal variables to overcome this. Although census reported income does include interest, rent and other income, it is predominantly salary making this an accurate (albeit imperfect) measure.  Below we see the jobs with the largest pay gap favoring males - followed by some of the few where the pay gap is reversed.

  • The pay gap for Secretaries increases as age increases.

  • The pay gap for Actors also increases with age.  But decreases as the age of Sportspersons increases.

We can also explore diversity and see the following ...

  • School Principals is the job most likely to belong the people of NW European origin (70.0%) - Packers and Product Assemblers the least (21.4%).

  • The most Male (major) job is Roof Tilers (99.5%) - the most Female is Dental Assistants (98.1%).

  • Surgeons are the profession most likely to be working 49+ hours per week (71.5%).
